The number of young women who are victims of forced marriage could be as high as 4,000, says Margaret Moran, Labour MP for Luton South and member of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, following a study by Dr Nazia Khanum. The study found that 300 approaches were made to Luton-based support services from people worried about forced marriage. Moran said 'If you multiply the statistics up and down the country, we're talking about 3-4,000 cases rather than 300'. Dr Khanum's report says there is a wall of silence around forced marriages and calls for the authorities to take it more seriously: 'Forced marriage should be recognised as a form of bullying and domestic abuse and tackled in accordance with the normal professional standards and guidance for such cases'.
